Sports Arbitration
Our Firm’s sports arbitration expert, Christopher L. Campbell, a former World Champion and Olympic Bronze Medalist in wrestling, serves on two prestigious Olympic Sports arbitration panels. Mr. Campbell has been selected in over 25 “doping” disputes around the world that alleged the use by athletes of banned substances or performance enhancing drugs. For cases of this nature, Mr. Campbell is one of the foremost experts in the United States. He is also a panel member for the American Arbitration Association (“AAA”). A sample of the high profile cases Mr. Campbell served on for the AAA include Justin Gatlin (Olympic Gold Medalist in 100 Meter event), Tyler Hamilton (Cycling Olympic Gold Medalist), George Hartman (Judo), Kyoko Ina (Figure Skater), Floyd Landis (Cyclist stripped of the 2006 Tour de France Victory), and Kicker Vencil (Swimming).
Internationally, Mr. Campbell is a panel member of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (“CAS) in Lausanne, Switzerland. Mr. Campell has served on panels that involve numerous international athletes, among them Guillermo Cañas (International Tennis Player), Chryste Gaines (Athletics), Tim Montgomery (Former World Record holder in 100 meter dash), Konstantinos Kenteris (Athletics), Katerina Thanos (Athletics) and Joe Warren (Wrestling).
Mr. Campbell’s decisions have been cited by the United States Federal Judiciary numerous doping briefs by anti-doping organizations and athletes alike, and by a number of national and international news agencies. He has also been selected as an arbitration panel member for the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA). He is also on the AAA’s emergency list of arbitrators for “Right to Participate” disputes under the Ted Stevens Olympic and Amateur Sports Act.
Mr. Campbell’s expertise enhances arbitration panels in areas that include subpoenas of non-party witnesses, discovery disputes, confidentiality, and interpretation of national laws and their interface with the USADA and WADA Code.
As an arbitrator, Mr. Campbell is also available to preside over employment-related disputes.
